Save up to 90% on vehicle AC repair with Cool Air Rebate

The California Cool Air Rebate Program provides financial assistance to eligible Californians to repair leaking air conditioning systems with R-134a refrigerant in cars and light duty trucks. Fix your AC, enjoy a cool ride, and improve the air quality in your community!

To be eligible for the program, you must live in California and own a car manufactured between 1993 and 2019, or have an older vehicle that has been retrofitted with R-134a refrigerant. The program income eligibility requirements are based on 225% of the 2025 federal income poverty level. A reference chart is available here: income requirement.

How It Works

Step 1

Pre-Qualify

Answer five simple questions to see if you and your vehicle pre-qualifies. If so, move to the next step and complete the application.

Step 2

Rebate Approval

Submit a full application online or by mail. The Cool Air Rebate Team will send you a confirmation letter if your car is eligible for repair rebate.

Step 3

Repair Your AC!

Bring your vehicle and the approval letter to a participating auto shop to find out if it has a leaking AC. If your vehicle qualifies, the repair will be covered up to 90% of the cost.

Repair reimbursement: The Cool Air Rebate Program will pay participating repair shop 90% of the cost of qualifying repairs up to a maximum of $1,500 per vehicle ($1,666.70 repair cost). Program does not pay any portion of repair costs exceeding $1,666.70. If the diagnosis results in qualifying repairs and the consumer accepts the repairs, the program pays participating repair shop 100% of the diagnostic fee. If the diagnosis results in non-qualifying repairs or the consumer declines the repairs, program pays participating repair shop 90% of the diagnostic fee.
